About UsWe are a group of tenth grade students from Wamogo Regional High School in Litchfield, Connecticut. We are researching hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. We are basing our project on the Namib Desert Beetle. This beetle needs water to survive and it has a special way of collecting its water from fog in the Namib Desert.
We created a silo which collects water from the fog out of the air. Our silo has an acrylic top that is sprayed with rain-x, it is similar to the beetle's shell. Before we came to the decision of using an acrylic top, we tested multiple surfaces. We did the same procedure for all surfaces to find out which was was the most efficient. We put the surfaces that were sprayed with a hydrophilic spray in a tank filled with humidifiers to see how much water condenses on it. The acrylic one worked best and our silo is a very helpful product to help all the farmers in need. |
